What will you be doing?

European Impact is an initiative of the Changing Role of Europe research group, a group of enthusiastic researchers and lecturers at The Hague University of Applied Sciences who develop and share new knowledge about working in and with the European Union. We develop this knowledge through our own research and share it with programmes at the university, organisations, and professionals in the field. The research group is led by dr. Mendeltje van Keulen.

Through European Impact, the research group combines knowledge work with a diverse range of services, including training courses, workshops, (evaluation) research, and policy advice. To fulfill these activities, we are looking for a Junior Researcher (approximately 16 hours per week) for the following tasks:

  • (Co-)conducting practice-oriented research commissioned by organisations, through, for example, literature reviews, interviews, and focus group sessions. This focuses on the European influence and implementation of EU legislation and funds in municipalities;
  • Supporting training courses, workshops, and/or other knowledge-based activities for professionals and students;
  • Supporting the development of innovative knowledge products (e.g., a toolkit, roadmap, impact scan, podcast, or other publication formats).


What do we expect from you?

We naturally want you to be successful in this position. Therefore, it is important that you:

  • Hold a relevant Master's degree;
  • Be interested in all aspects of the European Union (governance, politics, and regulations), for example, what the EU means for businesses, provinces, municipalities, water boards, or implementing organisations;
  • Have demonstrable research skills;
  • Have work or internship experience at European institutions or domestic (co-)governments;
  • You are a team player who enjoys participating in various activities;
  • You can also work independently on (co-)writing, designing, or presenting research results.

As a research group, we meet regularly for work meetings, knowledge transfer, and team building. Therefore, some flexibility in your schedule is desirable.

You will become part of the research group team, gain new practice-oriented knowledge, and contribute to the Institutional Plan by strengthening the connection between research, education, and practice. In addition, there are many opportunities to build your network with EU professionals, both within and outside the Netherlands.

  • A one-year employment contract (D4), with longer-term options to be discussed after the first year, with a 0.4 FTE figure; 16 hours per week;
  • A salary of at least €3,609.94 and a maximum of €4,909.21 gross per month (scale 9) based on a full-time position;
  • 8% holiday allowance; An 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • A generous leave policy;
  • The choice of an NS business card (2nd class) for commuting expenses or a kilometer allowance.
